When Should You Cancel Your Internet Service Before Moving?

For most internet providers, you need 30 days to process your cancellation to avoid any extra fees associated with early termination. However, this timeframe can vary depending on your specific contract and internet provider. It’s always a smart idea to revisit your contract or reach out to your provider’s customer support – they should be able to help you with that.

You have to keep in mind, though, that it’s a completely different matter if you’re in a long-term contract with your internet provider, usually 12 months or 24 months. In this case, you might end up paying a hefty early termination fee. If this is the case, it might be worth exploring if transferring your service to your new address is a viable option. For example, you’re subscribed to Boost Infinite Plans. You might be able to keep your number and plan while enjoying the service at your new location. However, it’s essential to check with Boost Infinite directly to confirm if this is possible and to understand any potential fees or changes to your plan.

Is It Really Necessary to Cancel Your Internet Before Moving?

Not at all. If you can transfer your internet plan to your new location, that would be better because it’s less of a hassle on your part to find a new internet service provider. However, you have to check if your current provider has coverage for your new location. If yes, then ask them if it’s possible to just transfer your service because you’re relocating to a different place. But if not, you will need to look for a new provider available there.

Should You Coordinate with Your New Internet Provider Even Before the Move-In Date?

Yes, it is a great idea to settle your new internet connection beforehand. Doing this allows you to get your new home connected to the internet as soon as possible. For example, you opted for Dish Network internet. You should coordinate with them weeks or even months before you plan to move so they can process all the paperwork. This makes the waiting time shorter. After all, we know how frustrating it is to not be connected to the internet.

Is There a Way for You Not to Pay Early Cancellation Fees?

Unfortunately, there’s no guaranteed way to completely avoid early cancellation fees. These fees are typically outlined in the contract you signed and are a way for the provider to recover the costs associated with losing a customer before the contract ends. However, you can try negotiating with your internet provider if they can reduce the fees to ease the burden. It’s not guaranteed though, as the final decision will still be on your provider.

    Final Thoughts

Allotting enough time to cancel your internet before moving is a smart and responsible thing to do to avoid any stress or complications with your provider. While a 30-day notice is usually enough, you should still check your contract to see if it applies to what you’ve signed up for. Otherwise, you will need to pay extra fees that could be hefty.
